global imagine the future tour

“The power of our society is in our collective imagination” --the late Sally Ride, first American woman in space, quote from interview with Richard Tavener for the Imagine It! Project.
about GIFT
The Global "Imagine the Future" Tour (aka GIFT) is an international grassroots expedition for the future.
Our mission: to help people imagine the world a better place, and then to engage in making that happen.
GIFT is focused on unleashing the power of imagination to shape a positive future by teaching people--in-person, in villages, towns and cities around the globe; to realize their creative potential; to build creative capacity; to celebrate the power of imagination.
Global "Imagine the Future" Tour was seeded six-years ago as part of building The Imagine it! Project. Organizations involved include Stanford University, MIT, Smithsonian, Pixar, X-Prize, The Getty Museum, Lincoln Center Institute, Blue Man Group, Sally Ride Science, National Academy of Engineering among others.
"If one voice can change a room, then one voice can change a town. If one voice can change a town, then one voice can change a state. If one voice can change a state, then one voice can change a nation. And if one voice can change a nation, then one voice can change the world. Fired up, ready to go!"
We're fired up and ready to go; to put the power of imagination into action. One voice at at time. This is GIFT.

the tour

Global "Imagine the Future" Tour is a family team of Richard Tavener, his wife Amy and their daughter Q. Richard is co-founder of the Imagine It! Project, with the mission to raise awareness about the power of imagination to solve the grand challenges of our time. Amy is producer of multimedia programs for education. And, Q is a student attending an international virtual academy.
Richard and Amy are no rookies when it comes to expeditions. The couple traveled throughout the USA for several years, crisscrossing the country on the Entrepreneurs! Tour of America. Traveling in three large motor homes Richard and Amy recorded the stories of hundreds of "creative heroes," who put their imagination into action to start and build successful companies and organizations.
This time Richard, Amy and Q take to the road to travel the globe; from Argentina to Australia, South Africa to Singapore, Portugal to Panama on an educational expedition to help people to put their creativity to work to solve global, and local, challenges. Our white Land Rover Discovery II is being outfitted with "global travel" gear and decals. The finished vehicle will look similar to this one, photo from Drive Around the World.

teach

In each village, town and city Richard teaches the acclaimed Imagine It! interactive, multimedia curriculum to engage and inspire learners of all ages. Creating "ah ha" moments of learning excitement, the focus is on helping each individual realize their creative potential, to learn specific creativity skills while developing a personal creativity process. Students learn to recognize opportunities, connect unrelated stimuli and turn their ideas into economic value. Learn more about the Imagine It! curriculum.
Part of the learning process includes the "Creativity Challenge," a hands-on, experiential learning opportunity. Students are challenged to put their imagination into action; they learn valuable 21st century skills including teamwork, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, problem solving and presentation skills. Here's a video clip from Imagine It! Post it Notes, an example of a global creativity challenge.

build

We believe everyone is creative, so that means there is a lot of creative capacity in every village, town and city we visit. GIFT helps tap that collective creativity by bringing together learners of all ages--teachers, students, parents, mentors, engineers, scientists, business executives and government officials.
We teach the leaders of the community about the power of imagination and the value of seeing the world through fresh eyes. We teach the teachers who in turn inspire their young students, those who will be asked to take on the challenges of the future. We teach business people so they too can better train their employees to be more innovative, to help grow the local economy.
To sustain this collective creativity movement, we help by building a Wonderspace℠ in each community. Wonderspace℠ is an unconventional, physical location; sort of a "21st century coffee shop" where the entire community can collaborate to create the future. At Wonderspace℠ there are learning opportunities for everyone including youth after school programs, teacher workshops, public seminars and “next generation” leadership programs. Learn more.

celebrate

In each village, town or city we visit the Global "Imagine the Future" Tour hosts a unique event to celebrate the future called "imagination festival"--aka if.
"If" is an exciting, interactive party for the future, where everyone in town is invited to participate. What if? This is the question asked. Inventors, engineers, teachers, students, craftsmen, scientists, artists, musicians, business owners, writers and dreamers are all invited to showcase their imagination in action to address local, and global, challenges and opportunities.
This festival of imagination also includes the conclusion to the "Creativity Challenge," when awards are presented to the participating teams.
The end result: "if" looks, feels and sounds a lot like what you would get if you combined Burning Man with TED pulled together and presented by the Blue Man Group! It's one very big celebration of the creative spirit, shared by the entire community.
